The 2024 finalists, the Firenze Guelfi (2-0) will play host to the Varese Skorpions (1-0) Saturday, March 1 at the Guelfi Sports Center as the Italian Football League kicks off its third weekend of play.
The Guelfi have had an easy time of it to open their season with a 49-0 win over the 1984 Albisola S Pirates followed by a 42-13 victory over the Lazio Marines.
The Skorpions got by the Ferrara Aquile 15-12 in their first matchup of the season.
In the only meeting between the two teams in 2024, the Skorpions edged Firenze 7-0 in the mud at Ossola Stadium in Varese.
In the win over Lazio, the Guelfi found themselves trailing in the second quarter 13-7 but managed to take a narrow 14-13 lead. However, in the second half they exploded for 28 unanswered points for the win.
The quarterbacking duo of Andrea Fimiani (167 yds/4 TDs) and Eystin Salum (181/3) have combined for 348 passing yards and seven touchdowns through the air. Fimiani is also the Guelfi’s leading rusher with 16 carries for 201 yards and three scores.
For Varese, quarterback Hamish McClure completed 21 of 38 passes for 208 yards and two touchdowns in the win over the Aquille.
This will be a good test for both teams to determine where they stand. However, the Guelfi seem to be reaching midseason form and playing at home they will no doubt have revenge on their minds.
