The Ancona Dolphins (2-4) will be battling for their playoff lives Saturday, May 11 when then play host to the Firenze Guelfi (4-2) in Italy’s Div 1.
A loss today would put them in reach of the Bergamo Lions and in jeopardy of missing the playoffs.
The Dolphins lost last weekend to the league-leading Bolzano Giants 41-29 after having won two games in a row, beating the Bologna Warriors 18-15 and the Bergamo Lions 37-17. Prior to that, Ancona had lost three in a row, to the Parma Panthers, 14-10, Lazio Ducks, 41-12, and the Milano Seamen 29-6.
Ancona’s QB Nelson Hughes has moved up into 4th in passing yardage with 1,163 yards and 12 TDs.. Dylan Albertson is his leading receiver and second overall in the country with 614 yards and 8 TDs. However, the Ancona running attack is still poor averaging 47.5 yards a game, worst in the league.
Firenze got a much-needed win last week over the lowly Bologna Warriors, 34-28. They had dropped two in a row when they lost a last second thriller to the Milano Seamen, 34-28.and then lost to the league-leading Bolzano Giants 36-32. The Guelfi had opened the season with three solid wins over the Parma Panthers (27-17), Lazio Ducks (36-22) and the Torino Giaguari who they knocked off 49-14.
They need to win their last two games to have any chance at all of securing home field advantage in the playoffs.
Firenze boasts the second leading offense in the league averaging 34.3 points a game behind the league’s best running back in Silas Nacita and quarterback Lynx Hawthorne. Nacita is averaging 116.7 yards rushing per game to lead the country while Hawthorne is third with 65.7. Although Hawthorne has only thrown for 1,023 yards in six games, the Guelfi running attack makes up for it.
