The Ancona Dolphins (2-2) will play host to the 1-2 Bergamo Lions in Italy’s Division I April 14 at Stadio della Palla Ovale in Ancona in a game that already has huge implications for both squads.
The Dolphins suffered a 35-0 trouncing last week to the defending champion Milano Seamen after opening the season 2-1. Ancona had looked much improved in their two wins beating both the Milano Rhinos and UTA Pesaro decisively. Bergamo, on the other hand, won their first game of the year, beating Torino Giaguari 16-12. Torino had defeated the Dolphins in the season opener, 14-3.
A win by the Dolphins today, would really put Bergamo back on their heels. They would need to win four of their last six games to be sure of a playoff spot. A win by the Lions would pull them even with Ancona and an edge in a battle for a playoff berth.
Ancona’s offense is led by quarterback Josh Dean who is the fifth leading passer in Italy averaging 154.2 yards a game. Dean is also the sixth leading rusher with 222 yards rushing in four games.
Lions young quarterback Andrea Fimiani has rushed for 256 yards, good for fourth in Italy and thrown for an average of 104 yards a game in three games.
