LIVESTREAM: IFAF Women’s ECs – Finland v. Sweden, Wed. Aug. 14, 3p GMT (4p CEDT, 10a EDT)
The defending champions, Team Finland (1-0) will face their arch rivals in the IFAF 2019 Women’s European Championships on Wednesday, August 14, when they square off against Team Sweden (1-0) at John Charles Stadium in Leeds. England.
Make no mistake, this may well be the oldest, and most heated rivalry in women’s American football.
The Finns defeated Team Sweden 21-20 in an annual game between the two last October and it was the closest the Swedes have come to winning.
Finland enters the game after pummeling Team Austria 50-0 in their opening game of the tournament while the Swedes battled Team Great Britain to the very last second coming out with a thrilling 9-6 win.
For Finland, the key is their running game led by Tytti Kuusinen who scored four touchdowns in the rout of Austria. Mari Jääskelä is also dangerous and scored a touchdown. She was also the leading scorer in Finland’s win over Sweden last October. The Finns racked up 398 yards rushing against Austria.
For Sweden, Karin Ullén is the focal point. She scored the lone touchdown against Great Britain and had 98 yards receiving. Quarterback Linda Johansson threw for 142 yards in the opening game and in the narrow loss to Finland last October she threw for 172 yards and three touchdowns. In that game, Finland produced 261 yards rushing.
Needless to say, this will be Sweden’s aerial game against Team Finland’s ground attack.
