Team Austria, the 2018 European silver medalists, head to Chur, Switzerland Saturday, September 21 to face the Swiss national team in the first game of the qualifying round for both teams as they vy for the IFAF 2020 European Championships.
Austria reached the 2018 European final in Finland but suffered a surprising 28-14 loss to France.
The last time Switzerland took the field was in Alps Bowl III when they were crushed by Italy, 43-8 in January 2018.
Austria and Switzerland play in Group A of the tournament. Austria and Team Italy will tangle on October 6 in the second game of group play and then Switzerland will take on the Italians on October 20.
The team that wins the division will face the winners of the other four divisions for the medals.
The Austrians will field a team similar to the silver medal winning squad that won silver in 2018. This includes quarterback Alexander Thury, who won the Swedish title with the Stockholm Mean Machines this year, and the running back for the reigning Austrian champions Swarco Raiders, Sandro Platzgummer.
Switzerland will start Winterthur Warriors Richard Wartman at quarterback.
