The host nation, Great Britain will open the IFAF 2019 Women’s European Championships on Monday, August 12, by facing Team Sweden at John Charles Stadium in Leeds. England.
Sweden and Great Britain have faced each other three times previously with GB winning all three games; 27-10 in 2013, 26-14 in 2014 och 30-14 at the IFAF European Championships in 2015.
This is the most interesting matchup of Day 1. Although Sweden finished sixth and last in the 2015 European Championships in Spain, the team has progressed and came close to beating Finland a couple of times since then. Last year, the Swedes lost to the defending European champions by a single point, 21-20.
Head coach Christian Forsman will likely start Linda Johansson at quarterback with Anna Hedström at running back. defensively, Sweden will look to defensive tackle Johanna Aspenberg and defensive end Sara Lidner to anchor a solid front seven.
However, Great Britain looked impressive at the 2017 World Championships finishing fourth after losing a close game to Mexico in the bronze medal game. The Brits are playing at home and that home field advantage will be difficult for Sweden to overcome.
