The Saarland Hurricanes will host the Stuttgart Scorpions in their new stadium Ludwigspark as they return to Germany’s top league after a three-year hiatus. Both teams are eager to get back on the field after not playing in 2020 and want to set the tone for the new season with a win.
Saarland is led into the season by Australian coach Chris Lambropoulos. Coach Lambropoulos and the Hurricanes have brought in some new talent from top college programs in the United States by signing University of Colorado (NCAA D1) quarterback Josh Goldin and South Carolina University (NCAA D1 SEC) defensive back Chaz Elder. Goldin Will look to target another new face in former university of California (NCAA D1) receiver Victor Wharton. The two new faces on offense will look to veteran H-Back Leon Helm for leadership as he’s one of the teams’ toughest players on the Hurricanes roster.

Saarland’s new wide receiver Victor Wharton commented on the team’s mindset:
“We are excited! I know the guys are pumped to be back in the GFL1 and to compete against the best. All of us are anxious to go out there and play against someone other than ourselves!”
Defensively, the Hurricanes bring back some experience with defensive lineman Raphael Koll and Sasan Jelvani coming back. Versatile athlete Justin Jordan, former Division one defender Chaz Elder, and French defensive back Chaska Perron look to make this athletic secondary tough to throw against.
The Scorpions go into 2021 with new head coach Jeff Scurran. Scurran brings experience from the top high school level in Arizona, Germany, and Italy. Scurran has brought in talented quarterback Wyatt Hutchinson from the Southern Oregon University Raiders (NAIA). As a member of the Raiders, Hutchinson threw for 4,580 yards and 30 touchdowns while rushing for another 728 yards and nine scores. The Scorpions new quarterback will have some new talent around him as Stuttgart will look to develop young players this season.
Hutchinson on the team’s first game:
“I think everyone is really excited and eager to see how we have come together as a team in such a short period of time! Saturday will show us our strengths and what we need to work on going forward.”
Defensively, the Scorpions will feature some new homegrown talent along with returning defensive back retuning Marcus Bratton. Bratton is a veteran of the Scorpions who bring experience from the Swarco Raiders, Finland, France, and UVA-Wise (NCAA D2).
Look for the Hurricanes to play well in this matchup as their new talents spends more and more time together. On the other hand, the Scorpions look to compete in the tough German Football League with mostly home grown talent and a few key imports.
