LIVESTREAM Germany: Straubing Spiders @ Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, Aug. 27, 17:00 CET (5 pm, 11:00 am ET)
The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (9-0) will play host to the Straubing Spiders (6-3) Saturday, August 27 in the final game of the German Football League regular season for both teams.
This is the second meeting between these two teams this season. Schwäbisch Hall, the first place team in the GFL South, were easy 41-13 winners over the third place Spiders earlier in the year.
The Unicorns are coming off comfortable wins over the second place Munich Cowboys (28-6) and fourth place Allgäu Comets (49-28) while Straubing has lost two in a row to both the Comets (42-7) and Cowboys (17-16).
Schwäbisch Hall is the top scoring team in the GFL South averaging 44.7 points a game while giving up a league-best 15.3. In addition, starting quarterback, Reilly Hennessey has returned to form after missing almost a month due to injury. In the last two games, Hennessey has thrown for 575 yards and seven touchdowns. He will utilize his favorite receiver, Tyler Rutenbeck, who had missed a pair of games. In seven games he has caught 34 passes for 670 yards and 11 touchdowns. Tight end Moritz Böhringer is not far behind with 28 receptions for 466 yards and seven scores.
The Unicorns defense gives up 15.3 points and 240.1 yards a game, both league leading numbers.
The Spiders offense has relied on running back Lamar Carswell who leads the league in rushing with 111 carries for 1,287 yards and 17 touchdowns. However, Carswell suffered an injury to his arm early in the first quarter of the loss to Munich and did not return. It is unknown as to whether he will be able to play in this game. Quarterback Raleigh Yeldell has thrown for 1,700 yards and 16 touchdowns so far this year but if he is without his main weapon, Carswell, he will be forced to carry the load. He is the Spiders‘ second leading rusher with 88 carries for 614 yards and seven touchdowns and will no doubt be using his legs today.
Straubing’s defense has been giving up an average of 30.2 points a game and against the Unicorns’ offense, the second highest scoring in the GFL averaging 44.7 points a game, they will be in tough. Linebacker Donovan Hayden leads the team with 96 tackles including 13 tackles for loss and two sacks and his average of 12 tackles a game tops the GFL.
The game is important to the Spiders. A loss today coupled with a win by the Allgäu Comets in their final matchup against the Saarland Hurricanes would bump Straubing down to fourth in the GFL South and a playoff game against the GFL North leaders, the Potsdam Royals, in the quarterfinals.
