The Saarland Hurricanes (2-0) will host the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (1-0) in this GFL South Friday Night Lights matchup.

The Hurricanes are the new kids on the block, as they enter Germany’s top league this season for the first time since 2017. Schwäbisch Hall, last year’s German Bowl runner ups, will be visiting Saarland in their new stadium, as the Unicorns are eager to keep their dominant grip on the GFL South.

Saarland has played well to in its return to the GFL, winning it’s first two games handily. Quarterback Josh Goldin has been able to spread the ball around to receivers Victor Wharton and Marvin Fuchs. In the backfield, Kai Hunter provides Goldin with great hands as the shifty back is elusive in space. This week the GFL rookie quarterback Josh Goldin will face one of the best teams in Europe as the Unicorns athletic defense look make the pocket passer uncomfortable. The Hurricanes offensive line will have to step up as Schwäbisch Hall’s talented pass rush has been unstoppable so far this season

On defense, the Hurricanes will be facing a quarterback they know well, as the Unicorns starter Alex Haupert was a former standout quarterback for Saarland. Look for linebacker First Yildirim and defensive back Chaz Elder to try and force turnovers against a Unicorns offense that is loaded with talent.

Schwäbisch Hall comes to Saarland fresh off of a Central European Football League victory in Switzerland against the Calanda Broncos. In that game, former NFL tight end Mortiz Bohinger came alive finding the endzone and becoming a key part of the offense. Look for former Saarland quarterback Haupert to target the 6’4″ Minnesota Vikings draft pick in his homecoming game back in Saarland.

On defense, the Unicorns will need to get to the quarterback as Josh Goldin has carved apart opponents so far this year. Look for veteran pass rusher Corey Chapman to make an impact along with outside linebacker Tobias Leoffler. In the secondary, defensive backs Montez Lattimore and Cody Pastorini should help contain the Hurricanes dangerous playmakers.

This is a great test for Saarland as they look to make the upset and shock the GFL. The Hurricanes are eager to show that they are playoff contenders, this week they’ll have a chance to prove themselves against this year’s German Bowl title favorite.
