The Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (10-0), Europe #1, are on the road again this weekend as they travel to Marburg to face the 6-3 Marburg Mercenaries, Europe #17, in the final game of the weekend in the German Football League.
The Unicorns are looking to extend a 44 game winning streak and look poised to defend their German title for the third straight year.
The Mercenaries are on a roll after winning six straight as they have unleashed their passing game. They downed the Ingolstadt Dukes last week 40-33 and the week before upended the Kirchdorf Wildcats for win #5 beating them 41-28 a week ago. They put a walloping on the Stuttgart Scorpions right before the break, beating them 52-14 behind a 377 yards and 5 TD passing game from QB Jake Sullivan. They defeated the Munich Cowboys the week before 41-29 and before that downed the Ingolstadt Dukes 43-14 after notching their first win of the season the week before. It was a big one as they outdueled the Wildcats 55-49. They had dropped their first three games of the year in 2019, losing 52-9 to the defending champion Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, then 30-21 to the Stuttgart Scorpions and finally 20-14 to the Frankfurt Universe.
Sullivan is on fire and now leads the league in passing yardage and average yards per game having thrown for 2,915 yards in eight games, an average of 323.9 yards a game,. Hendrik Schwarz is his leading receiver with 736 yards receiving on 45 receptions. He is averaging 16.4 yards a catch and 81.8 yards a game. Luke Wildung has 42 receptions for 456 yards while Marvin Rutsch has caught 67 passes for 525 yards following a 122 yard receiving day against Kirchdorf. Running back Triston McCathem has 613 yards rushing (4th in average with 68.1/game) for the year but he also has 423 yards receiving.
Marburg’s offense is averaging 439.1 yards a game, good for third in the GFL, while the Unicorns have the stingiest defense giving up 198 yards a game.
The Unicorns enter the game on a 44 game winning streak stretching back to the 2016 German Bowl and have looked just as impressive as ever this year. Last week, in their first game following a four week break, they downed the Munich Cowboys 48-14. In the final game before the break, they dumped the Ingolstadt Dukes 51-0 and the week before, they disposed of the Kirchdorf Wildcats 56-0. They whipped the Stuttgart Scorpions 63-21 after blanking their German Bowl opponents and chief rivals the Frankfurt Universe, Europe #4, 31-0. Prior to that, they overwhelmed the Marburg Mercenaries 52-9, the Ingolstadt Dukes 24-0, the Munich Cowboys 35-3, Kirchdorf Wildcats 51-12 and Stuttgart Scorpions 63-13.
Unicorns QB Jadrian Clark is the most efficient passer in the GFL with a rating of 198.2. He has thrown for 2,385 yards and 35 TDs in the 10 wins this year. His top receiver so far has been Tyler Rutenbeck with 33 catches for 863 yards and 17 TDs while Nate Robitaille has 697 yards receiving and 10 TDs. As a team, the Unicorns are averaging 165.5 yards rushing a game, second best in the country with RB Maurice Schuele the top rusher with 456 yards.
Defensively, the Unicorns lead the GFL giving up just 7.2 points a game and top the league in yards allowed with 198.4.
The way Marburg has been playing of late, they could give the number one team in Europe a challenge.
