LIVESTREAM: Germany – Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns @Ingolstadt Dukes, Sat. May 4, 7p CEDT (1p EDT)
The reigning champion Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (1-0) are on the road for their second game of the season Saturday, May 4 when they head to Ingolstadt, to take on the Ingolstadt Dukes in the full opening weekend of play in the German Football League.
Last week, the Unicorns flexed their muscles, scoring 24 points in the fourth quarter to down the Marburg Mercenaries 52-9.
Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, the defending and back-to-back German champions, look poised for a three peat in 2019. Head coach Jordan Neuman has reassembled his title-winning team with a couple of tweaks. Gone is his championship QB in Marco Ehrenfried and in his place is Jadrian Clark who quarterbacked the Braunschewig New Yorker Lions in 2018 throwing for 3,627 yards and 45 touchdowns, good for fourth in the league. Last week against the Mercenaries, Clark threw for 341 yards and three touchdowns although he threw two interceptions.
Key returning players include WR Tyler Rutenbeck who led the team in receiving yards with 978 and last week caught four passes for 155 yards and two touchdowns, and LB Nick Alfieri who was the team’s leading tackler with 87 tackles..
Ingolstadt HC Eugen Haaf has his work cut out for him as he opens the 2019 season. His QB, Kyle Barnett broke his hand in the preseason and he will have to choose between veterans Cedric Townsend and Anthony Gardner to start the year. Both performed well in a preseason loss to the Potsdam Royals. He has also added WR Bobby Chan Chan (Northwestern State) and DB Fred Payne (Western Carolina University).
Ingolstadt will be in tough in this one but with a loud home crowd they could surprise.
