The Allgäu Comets (3-5) will host the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (9-1) as the German Football League heads down the home stretch.
These two teams staged a thriller to open the season when the Unicorns outlasted Allgäu 58-57.
The Comets are coming off a key win last week when they defeated the Saarland Hurricanes 33-21. The victory game on the heels of the worst loss they have ever suffered in the GFL after getting manhandled 96-14 by the Potsdam Royals the week before. They entered that game on a three-game losing skid dropping a 31-27 decision to the Munich Cowboys after losing 29-25 to the Straubing Spiders and 46-20 to the Ravensburg Razorbacks. After losing their opening game, Allgäu won two straight before dropping the last four. They fell just short to Schwäbisch Hall (58-57) in the first game, but rebounded with wins over the Razorbacks (56-28) and the Hurricanes.
The Unicorns lost their first game of the year in mid July when the Potsdam Royals whipped them 56-18 but rebounded by beating the Saarland Hurricanes 23-20 and the Kirchdorf Wildcats 45-17. They had gone unbeaten in their first six games although in their last three before the loss they had been pushed hard getting by the Ravensburg Razorbacks 31-28, the Munich Cowboys, 42-35 and the Straubing Spiders 24-21.
Comets quarterback Xeavier Bullock is the second leading passer in the GFL averaging 339.4 yards a game after throwing for 2,714 yards and 33 touchdowns in eight games. His favorite receiver is Nate Stewart who tops the GFL with 65 receptions for 1,081 yards and 14 touchdowns. He is followed closely by Ahsan Moore with 38 receptions for 600 yards and seven scores, and Dominik Hoerner with 25 catches for 495 yards and five touchdowns. However, Allgäu has the third worst ground game in the league averaging just 75.6 yards a game.
Schwäbisch Hall quarterback Conor Miller, who is in his fifth season in Europe, is the ninth leading passer in the GFL having thrown for 1.651 and 23 touchdowns against four interceptions. His key target is Jason-Matthew Sharsh who has 48 receptions for 717 yards and 10 scores while Julius Klenk has 32 catches for 382 yards and five touchdowns. Veteran running back Mike Gentili leads the league averaging 108.9 yards per game on 976 total yards and 10 touchdowns in nine games after missing the game against the Munich Cowboys.
The Comets are playing at home and have an aerial attack which can match Schwäbisch Hall’s. However, the Unicorns ground game will be a factor.
