This Saturday, the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns will play host to the Saarland Hurricanes in a German Football League South matchup as both 4-2 teams return from the midseason break.

In spite of their current seed being one beneath the Hurricanes, an impressive three-game stretch including a win over the previously undefeated Allgaü Comets saw the Unicorns appear three slots above Saarland in our midseason power rankings.

Despite a shaky start to their season, Schwäbisch Hall have proven still to be a top team in the South, taking their only two defeats to the Potsdam Royals and Braunschweig NY Lions, both of whom have had monumentally good seasons so far.

Although their defensive unit ranks among the best in the league, their offense has been subpar. Quarterback Ian Gehrke leads the GFL in interceptions while coming nowhere near the top of the leaderboard in any positive passing stats. Running back Mike Gentili continues to be effective on the ground, however, as he sits second in the league for rushing yards per game (85.0).

The Hurricanes, on the other hand, boast the highest scoring offense in the South. Led by ex-Cal Golden Bear (NCAA DI) quarterback Robby Rowell, Saarland has averaged over 38 points per game. Rowell not only ranks highly in all passing stats, having thrown for just shy of 1,400 yards and 17 scores in his five appearances, but also leads his team on the ground, rushing for 418 yards and six touchdowns. This places him third in the league for rushing yards per game with 83.6 – just 1.4 yards per game short of Schwäbisch Hall’s Gentili. Defensively, the Hurricanes have struggled to say the least, allowing 38.2 points per game, with both losses seeing them concede over 50 points. 

The matchup will no doubt be a high-scoring battle as both teams look to make a statement as they exit their midseason break.
