The Saarland Hurricanes (1-7) hit the road Saturday, August 10 to face the Kirchdorf Wildcats (1-7)  in a crucial battle that could determine who ends up in the relegation round of the 2024 German Football League season.

This is the first meeting between these two teams in 2023.

The Wildcats are coming off a close back-to-back lopsided losses after being beaten by the Hildesheim Invaders 56-7 and the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns 45-27. They had been narrowly defeated by the Ravensburg Razorbacks 28-25 after having won their first game of the season after defeating the Munich Cowboys 27-7. They had suffered four straight losses to open the season. They were beaten 36-10 by the Unicorns to open the season and then turned back 21-14 by the Cowboys. The Berlin Rebels handed them a 33-17 loss and then the New Yorker Lions beat them 24-3.

They will face a Saarland Hurricanes team that lost two high scoring games to the Berlin Rebels (39-38) and Comets (36-30) before beating the Ravensburg Razorbacks 44-32. They then proceeded to lose to the Unicorns 50-28, 40-12 to the Straubing Spiders, 37-20 to the New Yorker Lions, 23-20 to the Unicorns and finally 33-20 to the Comets.

For Kirchdorf, quarterback Armani Edden has thrown for a total of 1,343 yards and six touchdowns. The Wildcats leading rusher, Sebastian Mattscheck, has only rushed for 163 yards and the team has 571 total, second lowest in the GFL. Without a ground game, today’s game will be a tough one for the Wildcats.

For Saarland, quarterback Connor Kaegi (Ottawa University, NAIA), 6’7″, 225 pounds, joined the team to replace Andrew Brito and has thrown for 356 yards and five  touchdowns in the two games he has played in. His main target will no doubt be Spencer Corona who is the sixth leading receiver in the league in overall yardage (670) and in yards per game (83.8).  Benjamin Thompson is the leading rusher for the Hurricanes having carried the ball 54 times for 226 yards and two touchdowns.
