The Paderborn Dolphins (2-4) will be on the road to face the Straubing Spiders (3-4), Saturday, August 3 in one of five German Football League games on tap.
This will be the first game since June 30 for Paderborn.
The Spiders have dropped their last two games losing a tough one to the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns 24-21 and then getting beaten by the Ravensburg Razorbacks 34-20. Prior to that, they had won two of their previous three including a big 29-25 win over the Allgäu Comets.
Paderborn opened the season with a loss, dropping a 38-7 decision to the powerful Dresden Monarchs. They then won two in a row surprising the New Yorker Lions 10-7 and then edging the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes 21-19. However, they fell to the Hildesheim Invaders 50-31 before losing to the Berlin Adler 44-33. They were dropped 35-7 by the Lions in their last outling.
Luis Wittmann is the main quarterback for the Spiders although backup Alexander Biebl has seen a fair amount of action. Wittmann has thrown for 861 yards in the six games he has started while Biebl has just over 100. Colton Smith has 25 catches for 366 yards. Running back Kamal Cass is the fifth leading rusher in the GFL in overall yardage with 541, and is fourth in average per game with 78.
For Paderborn, Zachary Whitehead has completed 121 of 178 passes for 1,259 yards and two of his main targets have been Clemens Schuldt and Louis Waldmann who have 338 and 218 yards receiving respectively in the six games. Joshua Breece rushed for 434 yards on 78 carries and scored four touchdowns but also hauled in a team-high 28 passes for 242 yards and two scores.
Both teams are battling to earn a playoff berth although for the Dolphins it’s a tougher road. Paderborn sits sixth in the GFL North trailing both the Berlin Adler and New Yorker Lions with games in hand. But with both Dresden and Potsdam on their remaining schedule, it will be rough going.
