Saturday, May 27th will see the Berlin Rebels (1-0) play host to the Marburg Mercenaries (0-1) in the second week of action in the German Football League’s 2023 season.
The Rebels are coming off a hard-earned 21-13 win over crosstown rivals, the Berlin Adler last weekend.
The game saw an almost all-new Rebels offensive unit take the field, headlined by quarterback Connor Kaegi (USA, Ottawa University NAIA). Kaegi found success through the air, passing for 154 yards and two touchdowns, spreading the ball to four different targets throughout the game. Kaegi also led the team on the ground, picking up 73 yards on 11 carries.
The Rebels’ ground game, however, appeared to struggle throughout the game, aside from a flash of excellence from Tyrese Johnson-Fisher (UK, Istanbul Rams), who picked up a 68-yard touchdown in his GFL debut.

Defensively, Jorgen Guldbrandsen was a standout player for Berlin, leading the way in total tackles, sacks and tackles-for-loss.
The Marburg Mercenaries took an embarrassing loss to the Dresden Monarchs last weekend, in a game that finished 59-6.
With Dresden picking up the same number of scores as the Mercenaries picked up first downs, there aren’t a lot of positives to pick up on either side of the ball.
Although as an offensive unit they were far from productive, Marburg managed to have a fairly clean day in terms of turnovers, with the only turnover coming from newly signed veteran quarterback Danny Farley (USA, University of Wisconsin Stout, NCAA DIII) on a lofted ball that was picked off by Joe Cassidy (UK, Dickinson College, NCAA DIII).
On the other side of the ball, the Mercenaries simply couldn’t handle the QB-WR partnership of Steven Duncan (USA, Tarleton State, NCAA DI) and Austin Mitchell (USA, Southeastern Louisiana NCAA DI), with Mitchell hauling in eight receptions for 233 yards and four touchdowns.
Marburg will have certainly learnt from a lot of their mistakes as they head to Berlin, but will it be enough to come away with a win?
