LIVESTREAM Germany PPV: Berlin Adler @ Hildesheim Invaders, July 27, 16:00 CET (4 pm, 10 am EDT)
The Hildesheim Invaders (6-1) will play host to the Berlin Adler (4-3) in the most interesting matchup in the German Football League North conference this weekend.
These two teams met in the second week of the season with the Invaders coming away 49-42 winners on a touchdown by quarterback Nelson Hughes on the final play of the game.
Hildesheim currently sits second in the GFL North while the Adler are fifth.
After opening the season by losing 56-21 to the defending champion Potsdam Royals, the Invaders have won six straight first beating the Berlin Adler 49-42, the Berlin Rebels 36-19, Paderborn Dolphins 50-31 and the Ravensburg Razorbacks in overtime 31-30. They then downed the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes 43-34 before whipping the Kirchdorf Wildcats last week 56-7.
The Adler are coming off a narrow 21-20 win over the Munich Cowboys after suffering a tough 44-32 loss to the Dresden Monarchs. The loss to Dresden came after a three game winning streak which saw them beat the Straubing Spiders 26-21, the Berlin Rebels 27-18 and the Dolphins 44-33. They had opened the season losing two in a row, 49-42 o the Invaders and then 58-0 (!) to the Potsdam Royals.

Hildesheim quarterback Nelson Hughes has thrown for 1,763 yards and 19 touchdowns in the seven games with Lennart Stukenborg being his main target with 28 receptions for 350 yards and three scores and running back Jordan Grant who has 18 receptions for 182 yards. Grant has rushed for 606 yards and seven scores, good for second in overall yardage and average yards per game while Hughes has rushed for 425 yards and eight touchdowns.
The Adler offense has looked solid so far but the return of quarterback Zach Cavanaugh to the lineup for two games did make a difference. Cavanaugh, Berlin’s head coach, did not play the first four games of the season. He threw for 654 yards and eight touchdowns in the two games but returned to the sideline for the Cowboys game and will stick to coaching today as well. Young Hendrik Scharnbacher, a former Hildesheim youth player, who had been the starter before Cavanaugh’s return, returned last week and threw for 148 yards and two scores adding to his total for the year which is now 864 yards and 10 touchdowns.
The top receivers for the Adler include wideout Maylan Bacher who has 29 catches for 413 yards and three scores and Chuka Austin Okpalobi who has hauled in 29 passes for 434 yards and five touchdowns. Running back Chrisman Kyei has rushed for 477 yards on 85 carries (5.6 yds/carry).
The Adler badly need a win to stay in playoff contention and they would also like to get some revenge for the last second loss to Hildesheim earlier in the season.
Expect a battle today.
