LIVESTREAM Germany PPV: Allgäu Comets @ Braunschweig New Yorker Lions, Aug. 26, 18:00 CET (6 pm, 12 noon EDT)
Two of the German Football League’s top teams will go at it Saturday, August 26 as the Allgäu Comets (8-2) will travel to Braunschweig for a late season matchup against the New Yorker Lions (7-2).
Just when it looked like there was not much that could stop Allgäu and their high-powered offense, last week they were the victims of a late-season upset as they fell to the three-win Straubing Spiders in a 36-31 defeat. On the other side, the New Yorker Lions are coming off of a dramatic game of their own. With a 21-14 lead late in the fourth quarter, the Lions held off a late Berlin surge to escape with a 21-20 win against the Adler.
While the Comets are coming off of a loss, they are still one of the best teams the GFL has to showcase. Through eight games, the Comets are ranked second in the GFL is total points with 340 and total offensive yards with 3977.
What may be the Comets biggest issue heading into the playoffs is their defense. Just last week they gave up 36 points in their loss to the Straubing Spiders. The Spiders rank 11th in the GFL in total points and yards per game. So this could be concerning to see if the Allgäu defense can hold up against a playoff caliber offense.
In Braunschweig, the Lions defense might have what it takes to take down the high-powered Comets offense. The New Yorker defense has been the best statistically in the GFL this season. They have given up the fewest points and yards out of all 15 teams in the league. The Lions have also terrified opposing quarterbacks with a league leading 16 interceptions.
On offense, their clear advantage comes on the ground with their rushing attack. Leading the charge this season has been D’wayne Obi. Obi is the league leader in rushing yards per game with 117.7. He also is tied for the third most rushing touchdowns with eight.
With both teams heading into the end of the season with the playoffs on their mind, look for this game to be a good one. Will the high-powered Allgäu Comets offense prevail? Or will the New Yorker Lions continue to show why they have been the best defense in the GFL this season?
