LIVESTREAM: Germany – Potsdam Royals @Berlin Rebels, Sat. May 11, 6p CEDT (12p EDT)
The Potsdam Royals (0-1) head to Berlin, Germany Saturday, May 11, to face the Berlin Rebels (0-0) who open their German Football League season.
Last year, the two teams split the series between them with the Royals winning the first game 31-20 and Berlin securing the win in the second, 21-18.
The Rebels have played one preseason game so far this year, beating Sweden’s Carlstad Crusaders 31-13 in Karlstad, Sweden. Potsdam, on the other hand, lost their home opener to the Hildesheim Invaders, 50-28.
In that one, Rebels quarterback Terrell Robinson completed 15 of 23 passes for a modest 135 yards and one touchdown, but added another 74 on the ground along with one rushing touchdown. Berlin running back Andreas Betza had 13 carries for 98 yards and another score while Ahmad Khalife and Jason Harris also added majors.
The Rebels finished third in the GFL North with a record of 11-3 in 2018 and were eliminated in the GFL quarterfinals by German Bowl finalists, the Frankfurt Universe, losing 6-5 in a downpour. Under head coach Kim Kuci, the Rebels have been a title contender in the German Football League since he took over in 2016 with an overall regular season record of 29-12-1.
The core of the 2018 squad remains for Berlin. Robinson enters his fourth season as quarterback for the team and linebacker Rory Johnson is in his seventh season. Other American imports include safety Paul Morant and receiver TJ Esekielu. In addition, the team also has imports from Belgium, Poland, the Netherlands, France, Cameroon, Ukraine, Austria and Australia.
Potsdam head coach Michael Vogt has lost his starting QB Cody Williams suddenly and in the loss to Hildesheim had to rely on backups Jacob Tucker and Paul Zimmermann. The pair engineered four touchdowns so what Vogt will decide in this game is up in the air. Wide receiver Keevan Lucas had 122 yards receiving in the game against Hildesheim and is a dangerous target. DL Michael Reynolds and Sweden’s top receiver, WR Jacob Dahre, are two key additions.
