This Saturday, the 1-0 Paderborn Dolphins will take a trip to Braunschweig to face the 1-0 New Yorker Lions as the second weekend of play in the German Football League’s 2023 season winds up.
Paderborn are coming off a 33-28 victory against the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes in their first GFL game since earning promotion from GFL2.
Paderborn went down a score within seconds, as Hurricanes DB CJ Davis returned the opening kickoff for 98 yards. The lead was short lived however, as Paderborn’s Joshua Breece took the following kickoff for 99 yards to even the score. The game also featured a Hurricanes pick-six and field-goal return touchdown.
On top of his kickoff return, Dolphins’ back Joshua Breece had an impressive day on the ground, rushing for 86 yards and two touchdowns, including a 51-yard touchdown. Paderborn struggled in the air, with Niklas Gorny passing for just 82 yards with a touchdown and an interception returned for a touchdown.
Defensively, the Dolphins had a dominant performance, allowing just one score and claiming four interceptions throughout the game.
The New Yorker Lions left Straubing last week with a 34-0 win over the Spiders, dominating in all phases. Former Jackson State (NCAA DI) quarterback Kare Lyles had a notable debut, passing for 215 yards and two touchdowns, spreading the ball to 10 different targets. Another standout performer was Dwayne Obi (UK, London Warriors), whose first outing saw him pick up 112 yards and a touchdown over 15 carries.
The Lions’ front seven will also be a unit to watch on Saturday, as they managed to hold the Spiders to under 45 yards rushing.
