The Comets have their eyes dead set on the postseason but will need today’s game and a strong end to the season to punch their ticket. Expect Allgäu to play well at home as they’ll have the crowd rocking once again in Iller Stadium.
Allgäu’s offense is an exciting unit to watch. The Comets have an intriguing offense that features two athletic quarterbacks that can improvise well. Young Brit Sam Huxtable has played well in his four starts while newly added Jake Schimenz has put up seven touchdowns in two games with the Comets. Expect both quarterbacks to play again today. Whoever is playing quarterback will certainly be looking to target veteran Brandon Kohn and German speedster Marcel Shade on the outside. Schade comes into today on a hot streak putting up 263 yards and three touchdowns in his last two games. On the ground, Glenn Toonga has been the engine for this offense putting up 864 yards and 10 touchdowns this season, good for second-best in the league.
Marburg Mercenaries @ Allgäu Comets, August 29,15:00 CET (3 pm, 9 am ET)
Defensively, the Comets feature what might be Germany’s best defensive line. Peter Aretesen leads the league with 11 sacks, while Jermaine Guynn and Jonell Pelie combine with homegrown defensive tackle Johannes Wagner to make this front four a tough matchup for any European offensive line. The Comets pass rush has put up 29 total sacks this season far and away best in the league. The talented defensive front combines with middle linebacker Niall Padden and young defender Kevin Titz creating the league’s best rushing defense that’s been giving up only 30 yards rushing a game.
Marburg heads to Kempten eager to bounce back from a loss to the Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. Mercenaries’ defensive lineman Nico Koch helps anchor the trenches for Marburg. Behind Koch, Robert Heyward is Marburg’s leading tackler making eight stops per game, good for fourth in the league. Expect Heyward to be busy today against a run-heavy Comets offense.
Offensively, the injury to star running back Marcus Cox has severely slowed down the Mercenaries. German quarterback Sonny Weishaupt is determined to respond and finish the season strong as Marburg approaches its final stretch of the regular season. Expect Weishaupt to target receiver Aaron Seward along with speedster Marvin Hart. Hart a product of Stony Brook University (NCAA D1 FCS) has shown the ability to play in all three phases as a defensive back, kick returner, and receiver. on the ground, if starter Marcus Cox remains sidelined expect German tailback Melvin Detroy to take his place in the lineup.
The Mercenaries go into Kempten with nothing to lose and are eager to play spoiler for a Comets team focused on the postseason. Expect the Comets to come out focused as they control their own destiny and are determined to secure their playoff spot sooner rather than later.
