LIVESTREAM: Germany – Kirchdorf Wildcats @Allgäu Comets, Sunday, June 16, 3p CEDT (9a EDT)
The 1-3 Allgäu Comets will be looking for win #2 Sunday, June 16, when they host the winless Kirchdorf Wildcats (0-4-1) in Kempten, Germany as the German Football League winds up its sixth weekend of play.
The Comets notched their first win of the 2019 season last week when they downed the Ingolstadt Dukes 28-26 at home in Kempten. Allgäu was blanked in the opening game of the season by the Frankfurt Universe and then dropped two in a row to the Munich Cowboys, 31-16 and 21-18.
The Comets needed their offense to kick into gear and it did in the win over the Dukes. Quarterback Calvin Stitt threw for 147 yards and a touchdown but running back Lennies McFerren had a breakout game rushing for 143 yards and two touchdowns. He will no doubt be a key factor for the Comets today. Defensively though, Allgäu is the toughest team in Germany to run against having given up just 36 yards rushing in four games. This could be a huge factor in this game.
Kirchdorf has opened the GFL season with a tie and four losses. Before dropping a 31-29 decision to the Stuttgart Scorpions last week, the Wildcats had played the Munich Cowboys to a 27-27 tie, dropped a 34-7 decision to Stuttgart and then were walloped 52-14 by the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns. Two weeks ago, they lost to Marburg in a shootout, 55-49.
KIrchdorf QB Ian Kolste (Whitworth) has thrown for 1,001 yards and five touchdowns in five games while Clayton Turner came in against the Unicorns and threw for 90 yards. Receiver Robert Ruiz (Colorado State) has hauled in 40 catches for 761 yards and three touchdowns and leads the country in receiving yardage. Running back Alex Braunsberger has rushed for 294 yards, good for 10th in the GFL and also caught six passes for 49 yard.
If the Comets can repeat their performance from last week, they have a good chance of getting the win in front of their hometown fans. However, Kirchdorf has been very close to winning their last two games, one at home and one on the road. Is it their turn today?
