LIVESTREAM GERMANY: Kiel Baltic Hurricanes @ Dresden Monarchs, August 7, 15:00 CET (3pm, 9am ET)
The Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (2-4) will travel east to play the Dresden Monarchs (4-1) in the always loud H-Steyer Stadium as the German Football League rolls into the second half of the season.
The Hurricanes are a confident team on a two-game winning streak heading into hostile territory. Meanwhile, the Monarchs are hungry to get back on the field after the summer break and continue their playoff push.
Kiel’s head coach Timo Zorn feels confident in his defense as the GFL’s leading tackler Darin Hungerford anchors this unit. The speedy linebacker has had an outstanding season making 12 tackles a game. Domestic talents Marian Baecker and Gerrit Hoeppner are two defensive backs to watch in this one. The duo will have to play well today in the secondary, as Dresden’s pass-happy offense is averaging 326 passing yards a game.

Offensively, the Hurricanes have one of Germany’s most exciting receiver-quarterback combinations in signal-caller Joe Germinerio and wideout Weston Carr. Carr’s size and speed have set him apart as the former Penn State (NCAA D1) product has put up 627 yards and eight touchdowns this season. However, receiver Benedict Engelmann stole the show last week racking up 141 yards and a touchdown. Lorenz Rotermund and Fritjof Richter share the load running the ball, along with Germinerio taking matters into his own hands, giving this offense enough of a threat on the ground to keep defenses honest. Today they’ll have to execute against a well-coached and athletic Monarchs team.
One of the standouts of this Dresden defense is former Oregon University (NCAA D1) linebacker Apelu Kaulana. Kaulana’s top-level college football experience blends well with veteran German linebacker Florian zur Nieden giving Dresden one of the best linebacker corps in the league. The secondary features Andrew McElroy and Swiss talent Tim Hagmann. The two will surely be keyed in on Weston Carr in an effort to slow down one of the league’s top offensive weapons. At the line of scrimmage, Frenchman Yoann Miangue hopes to return from injury as the 6’6 former NFL International Pathway Player looks to make a greater impact during the second half of the season.
Dresden’s offense has been in rhythm all season long. The Monarchs air raid attack is led by ex Colorado State (NCAA D1) quarterback KJ Carta-Samuels. Carta-Samuels’s big arm and quick decision-making have been the catalyst for one of the best offenses in Germany, currently averaging 41 points per game. The signal caller’s favorite targets include former Michigan State (NCAA D1) receiver Darrell Stewart Jr. and Czech talent Radim Kalous.
Head coach Ulrich Dauber stayed busy during the break, adding another weapon for his offense in Anthony Brooks. Brooks is a dual passport receiver who has played in Finland and Germany, most recently putting up 1,086 yards and nine touchdowns for the Frankfurt Universe in 2019. Expect the Worcester University (NCAA D2) product to contribute immediately. Dresden also beefed up their line adding three Czech players, offensive linemen Miroslav and Zbynek Kysilka, along with defensive end Jakub Smutny.
Today’s game will put the Kiel secondary to the test as they line up against a potent Dresden passing attack. The Monarchs are eager to earn the GFL North’s top spot after a fantastic first half of the season. Fans can anticipate a competitive game as Kiel has shown the ability to play with some of the most talented teams in the GFL.
