LIVESTREAM: Germany – Ingolstadt Dukes @Marburg Mercenaries, Sunday, June 2, 4p CEDT (10a EDT)
The Marburg Mercenaries (1-3) will play host to the 0-3 Ingolstadt Dukes Sunday, June 1 as the German Football League winds up its fifth weekend of play.
The Mercenaries are coming off their first win of the season last week and it was a big one as they outdueled the Kirchdorf Wildcats 55-49. They had dropped their first three games of the year in 2019, losing 52-9 to the defending champion Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns, then 30-21 to the Stuttgart Scorpions and finally 20-14 to the Frankfurt Universe.
Marburg quarterback Jake Sullivan was outstanding against the Wildcats throwing for 483 yards to up his season total to 1,254 yards and 9 TDs. Marvin Rutsch has caught 23 passes for 155 yards while teammate Triston McCathem had a monster game rushing for 148 yards to increase his total to 220 yards for the year. But he also had nine catches for 84 yards and now has 219 yards. Hendrik Schwarz had a field day last week against Kirchdorf with 10 receptions for 193 yards and 2 TDs. He now leads the team with 365 yards receiving.
Ingolstadt lost 37-13 to the Frankfurt Universe, dropping them into the GFL South Conference basement. They had lost 24-0 to the powerful Schwabisch Hall Unicorns to open their 2019 season, holding the Unicorns to 299 yards of offense. But they then suffered a disappointing 37-30 loss to the Stuttgart Scorpions.
Anthony Gardner who had completed 11 of 23 passes for only 82 yards in the first game had a complete turnaround in game #2 throwing for 327 yards and four touchdowns in the loss to Stuttgart. He was also his team’s leading rusher with 46 yards on the ground. Against Frankfurt, he threw for only 145 yards with Cedric Townsend stepping in as well. As a team, the Dukes have only rushed for 255 yards in three games.
If Marburg gets the same type of performance from Sullivan, it could be a long afternoon for the Dukes unless Gardner can get untracked.
