The Frankfurt Universe (4-1) will be trying to return to the win column Sunday, June 16 when they host the 0-5 Ingolstadt Dukes at PSD Bank Arena in German Football League South sixth round action.
Frankfurt suffered an embarrassing 31-0 defeat at the hands of arch rivals and defending German champions, the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns in their last outing.
Frankfurt had opened the 2019 season with four wins, beating Ingolstadt 37-13, after getting by the Munich Cowboys the week before 24-17. They had downed the Allgau Comets 20-0 in their opening game and then defeated the Marburg Mercenaries 20-14.
For Frankfurt, Steve Cluley has thrown for 1,143 yards and 11 touchdowns with Sebastian Sagne (339 yds, 8 TDs), Antony Brooks (352 yds) and George Robinson (177 yds), as his leading targets. Running back Oscar Nevermann from Sweden has a total of 169 yards rushing in the five games.
Ingolstadt dropped a tough 28-26 decision to the Allgäu Comets last weekend to remain without a win. They had lost 43-13 the week before to the surging Marburg Mercenaries after losing 37-13 to the Universe the week prior to that. They had dropped 24-0 decision to the powerful Schwabisch Hall Unicorns to open their 2019 season. But they then suffered a disappointing 37-30 loss to the Stuttgart Scorpions.
The Dukes had been alternating at quarterback between Anthony Gardner and Cedric Townsend but last week new addition, Cory Benedetto started throwing for 279 yards and two touchdowns. He will likely get the start today. His chief target was Normen Schumm who had 133 yards receiving on three catches while Anthony Mella caught two touchdown passes from Benedetto. The running game has begun to improve the Dukes are averaging 103 yards a game with Phillip Ponander the leading rusher with 162 yards.
The Dukes badly need a win but so do the Universe to keep pace with Schwabisch Hall.
