The Munich Cowboys will host the Frankfurt Universe in the first weekend of play in the German Football League’s return. This game should give fans a excellent first look at a new look universe team and the program being built in Munich.
The Frankfurt Universe are led in 2021 by new head coach Mele Mosqueda. Mosqueda takes over a Universe program that lost many of its key players to the rebirth of the Frankfurt Galaxy in the European League of football. This year’s Universe team will look quite different than those in year’s past.
Offensively, tight end Lucas Laurel and returns along with running back Phillip Wollrab. Some new faces on this offense will be quarterback Terrance Shambry and athlete Brandon Butler. Shambry is a dual threat passer who has experience playing at Shaw University (NCAA D2) and for the Tychy Falcons in Poland.

On defense, Frankfurt will rely on returning veterans Robin Michel in the secondary and defensive lineman Gjergji Gerisha. Versatile athlete Brandon Butler also looks to contribute in the Frankfurt secondary. On the defensive line fans can expect Jack Brennan from the UK to be a force at the line of scrimmage. Brennan commented on Frankfurt’s pre-season preparation:
“The team is really excited for the season after such a long hiatus. A big part of getting ready for us has been team building and creating a culture given the short amount of time we’ve had to train. Given that, I think we’ve come together well as a team and are ready for Munich.”
The Cowboys look to get back in the playoff hunt this season after a disappointing 2019 campaign. The Garren Holley coached squad has some new faces as Holley has brought in veteran quarterback Justin Sottiliare. Sottilare brings experience from Germany, Finland, Russia, Spain, and Wesley College (NCAA D3) to the table along with a rocket arm. The veteran passer will be targeting former University of Oklahoma receiver Michiah Quick along with German talent Jakob Wenzel this season.
Defensively, Munich has signed safety AJ Smith (Western New Mexico University NCAA D2) to bolster their secondary. Expect athlete Brandon Watkins to contribute both ways as the former rugby star has a versatile toolset. Veteran linebacker Leon Nieper returns and is projected to be one of the Munich’s leaders on defense.
Head coach Garren Holley commented on the upcoming season:
“The team and staff are very excited. We are eager to showcase the development of our program over the covid football break. Our confidence is high and it should be a great game, to start the 2021 season.”
Fans can expect this Munich team to be ready to go against Frankfurt. This game should give us great insight on how things might shake out in the competitive GFL south.
