LIVE STREAM: Germany – Dresden Monarchs v. Kiel Baltic Hurricanes (6p CEST, 12p EDT)
The Dresden Monarchs will be looking for a measure of revenge Saturday during their 25th anniversary celebration as they face the undefeated Kiel Baltic Hurricanes at home at DDV Stadium in Dresden.
The Monarchs (3-1) were embarrassed last week in a lopsided loss to the Braunschweig New Yorker Lions. The 4-0 Hurricanes on the other hand, delivered a lopsided loss to the Hildesheim Invaders.
The two teams faced each other twice in 2016 with each gaining a victory in back-to-back games. Dresden lost the first one 35-30 and then exacted revenge in the second game whipping Kiel 56-14.
The Hurricanes offense behind the quarterbacking of Australian Jared Stegman has rolled up 197 points in four games and Stegman has thrown for 951 yards and 18 touchdowns. Running back Chris McClendon leads the league in rushing with 653 yards on 61 carries and six touchdowns.
Dresden quarterback Garrett Safron has completed 79 of 117 passes for 1,100 yards and 15 touchdowns.
The Monarchs have an Australian connection of their own with a quartet of Aussies – defensive back Isaac Summerfield, defensive linemane Alan Steinohrt, receiver Jacob Templar and linebacker Marcos Delana.
In fact, this is the first European meeting between Stegman, Australia’s national team quarterback, and his teammates from Team Outback and he is looking forward to it:
“I’m looking forward to seeing them and it will be an exciting game. They are all tough players and fighters. Isaac was something like my “fourth quarter nemesis” in Queensland. He intercepted some of my passes. “
In Queensland, Summerfield played with the Gold Coast Stingrays against Stegman and in 2010, ’12 and ’14 with him for the Queensland Sundevils. They also played together on “Team Outback” at the 2015 World Cup in Canton, Ohio.
The biggest Australian connection is of course Dresden head coach John Leijten who is also head coach of the Australian national team and instrumental in bringing all these Australian players to Europe.
