The 3-1 Dresden Monarchs will be looking to hand the undefeated (5-0) Hildesheim Invaders their first loss of the season Saturday, June 15 when to travel to Hildesheim as the German Football League closes in on midseason.
The Invaders are coming off their fifth consecutive win, a 46-10 drubbing of the Dusseldorf Panther. In fact, Hildesheim is so far the most improved team in the league and won their four previous games by one-sided scores beating the Potsdam Royals 50-28, taking care of the Panther 49-17, downing the Cologne Crocodiles 31-14 and then defeating the Berlin Rebels 56-41.
Meanwhile, Dresden lost their first game of the year two weeks ago, dropping a narrow 34-31 decision to the Braunschweig New Yorker Lions. The Monarchs had won three straight, including 49-13 over the Dusseldorf Panther, 42-14 over the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes and a 17-0 shutout of the Cologne Crocodiles.
Invaders quarterback Casey Therriault, in his first season back in the GFL in two years is in prime form throwing for 1,577 yards and 23 touchdowns while rushing for another two. In Hildesheim’s second game against Dusseldorf, he completed 15 of 17 passes for 189 yards and against Cologne had had only 188 yards passing but three touchdowns. Therriault is also the team’s leading rusher with 212 yards tied with Sean Richard also with 212. Wide receivers Nathaniel Morris (629 yds, 8 TDs) s Jaleel Awini (431 yds, 6 TDs),and Anthony Dablé-Wolf (392 yds, 8 TDs) may be the most explosive set of receivers in the GFL.
Monarchs quarterback Zach Greenlee is second in the GFL in yards per game, 320, and has thrown for 1,281 yards and 11 touchdowns. His leading target is Kevonn Mabon who has 32 receptions for 623 yards and four touchdowns and leads the league in receiving yards per game (155.8 yds/game). British RB Glen Toonga has rushed for 246 yards and two touchdowns in four games while Greenlee has scored four touchdowns on the ground. Linebacker AJ Wentland leads a ferocious Dresden defense and is again the leading tackler in the GFL averaging 14.5 tackles (!) per game.
This game promises tons of fireworks with two of the top three scoring offenses in the country facing each other.
