LIVESTREAM Germany: Dresden Monarchs @ Berlin Adler, June 12, 16:00 CET (4 pm, 10:00 am ET)
The Berlin Adler (2-1) will play host to the defending German Football League champions, the Dresden Monarchs (1-1) Sunday, June 12 in a critical matchup for both teams.
The Adler are coming off of a 21-0 blanking of the Dusseldorf Panther last week following a lopsided 51-17 loss to the Potsdam Royals the week before. Berlin had opened the season with a tight 43-35 win over the Berlin Rebels. The Monarchs started the season on the road, losing 24-21 to the Potsdam Royals but rebounded with a 15-6 win over the Kiel Baltic Hurricanes.
The Adler sit fourth in the GFL North with Dresden right behind in fifth.
Berlin’s win over the Panther was welcome but it was based on defense as the Adler held Dusseldorf to only 189 yards of offense while only producing 274. So far on the year, in three games quarterback Zach Cavanaugh has thrown for 852 yards and five touchdowns and rushed for 122 yards and another four scores. Max Zimmermann is his leading target with 17 catches for 370 yards and four touchdowns. Veteran Patrick Donahue has 10 receptions for 120 yards. Running back Ali Khalif has rushed for 169 yards in the three contests, but only had three yards rushing against the Panther.
Dresden enters the game with a new quarterback, Justin Agner (Stetson University, NCAA Div. 1) after starting quarterback Austyn Carta-Samuels, injured his knee in the opening game against the Royals. Young German quarterback, Marvin Schöne, filled in last week against Kiel but threw for only 68 yards. Expect the Monarchs passing game to improve this week. Agner will have receiver Anthony Brooks (UK, Frankfurt Galaxy) to throw to. So far Brooks has caught 14 passes for 138 yards to lead the team. Interestingly, Dresden has not scored a passing touchdown so far this season which has put pressure on the ground game. Running back Yazan Nasser has rushed for 210 yards and two touchdowns while David Baum has carried the ball 24 times for 170 yards, averaging 7.1 yards a carry. However, with Agner now at quarterback, things will no doubt change.
