LIVESTREAM: Germany – Braunschweig New Yorker Lions @Potsdam Royals, Sat. June 15, 4:30p CEDT (10:30a EDT)
The 2-2 Potsdam Royals will play host to the 5-0 Braunschweig New Yorker Lions Saturday June 15 as the German Football League heads into its sixth full round of play.
The Lions downed Potsdam 35-14 a couple of weeks ago in Braunschweig.
The Royals dropped their opening game to the Hildesheim Invaders, losing 50-28, but rebounded in beating the Berlin Rebels 30-17. They then downed the Dusseldorf Panther 34-17 before losing to Braunschweig.
In the loss to Braunschweig, Potsdam relied on Paul Zimmermann at quarterback. He threw for 170 yards and a pair of touchdowns in that game. Regular starter Jacob Tucker had continued to improve and in the three previous games, two of which he has started, he threw for 657 yards and four touchdowns. There is no word as to who will start in today’s game. Wide receiver Keevan Lucas has had 324 yards receiving in four games and is a dangerous target. Running back Gennadiy Adams has given the Royals a rushing attack and has carried the ball 62 times for 311 yards and 5 TDs. Another key addition has been LB Dustin Illetschko who anchors the front seven. He has already recorded 37 tackles in four games.
Braunschweig has won its five opening games beating the Cologne Crocodiles in a back-to-back series, 23-6 and 45-7, and then took care of the only team that defeated them in the regular season last year, the Berlin Rebels. Braunschweig beat the Rebels 29-12. Last week, the Lions won a thriller, beating the previously unbeaten Dresden Monarchs 34-31.
The Lions offense has been effective with QB Brandon Connette throwing for just 675 yards in the five games. The backfield duo of Chris McClendon (327 yds) and David McCants (180 yds) along with Connette (344 yds) give the Lions the best rushing attack in the GFL averaging almost 170 yards a game. Wide receivers Nicolai Schumann (167 yds) and Christian Bollmann with 163 yards receiving lead the team.
Braunschweig has one of the best defenses in the GFL and has only allowed opponents an average of 207.4 yards of offense a game, second best in the GFL. Potsdam has been averaging 384. This will be a test for both.
