The Cologne Crocodiles (0-1) welcome the 1-0 Braunschweig New Yorker Lions to the unfriendly confines of Sportpark Höhenberg Köln stadium in Cologne, Saturday, May 11 for the second game in a back-to-back, home-and-home series in the German Football League’s second weekend of play.
Last week, the Lions downed Cologne 23-7 after scoring 13 points in the third quarter and then holding on for the win. In that game, Braunschweig quarterback Brandon Connette completed just 9 of 22 passes for 135 yards and one touchdown. He also scored on a one yard plunge. He was under pressure from the Crocodiles front seven all game and was sacked twice as the offense struggled. In fact, the Lions special teams accounted for the third major score returning a blocked punt for a touchdown.
For Cologne, QB Jan Weinreich threw for 154 yards and a touchdown but was picked off twice. RB Colby Goodwyn, who was the 2nd leading rusher in the GFL with Hamburg in 2018, led all rushers with 18 carries for 84 yards. He will definitely be a huge factor for the Crocodiles in today’s game.
This is a tough game to predict. With home field advantage, Cologne could pull of the upset although the Lions have never lost to Cologne since the Crocodiles entered the GFL in 2017.
