LIVESTREAM: Germany – Allgäu Comets @Stuttgart Scorpions, Saturday, Aug. 3, 6p CEDT (12p EDT)
The 2-6 Allgäu Comets will be traveling to Stuttgart with an air of confidence Saturday, August 3 to face the 6-4 Stuttgart Scorpions as the German Football League continues.
The Comets defeated Stuttgart last week 40-21 in the first of a back-to-back series marking their second win of the season.
The Comets had fallen 31-21 to the Ingolstadt Dukes in their last game and were in danger of dropping into the basement of the division. Meanwhile, Stuttgart who had been soundly beaten by the Mercenaries at the end of June but rebounded somewhat downing the Munich Cowboys 31-24 in a gritty effort a couple of weeks ago now need every win. Another loss to the Comets with back-to-back games coming up against the Frankfurt Universe would put them under the .500 mark.
The Comets had notched their first win of the 2019 season when they downed Ingolstadt 28-26 at home in Kempten. However, Allgäu dropped two in a row after that. They first lost a close one to the Kirchdorf Wildcats 27-25 and then were beaten 34-7 by the Frankfurt Universe. The Cometswere blanked in the opening game of the season 20-0 by the Universe and then dropped two in a row to the Munich Cowboys, 31-16 and 21-18.
The Comets new quarterback Raleigh Yeldell, picked up his game last week in the win over Stuttgart. Although he only threw for 126 yards and one touchdown, and threw two picks, he rushed for 149 yards and four touchdowns. The week before in the loss to the Dukes, he started his first game throwing for 187 yards and two touchdowns. Newly signed Swedish wideout Robin Juhlin was in the lineup in an offense run by new offensive coordinator and fellow Swede and former taammate, Sebastian Johansson. He caught one pass for 15 yards. Running back Lennies McFerren ran for 52 yards last week upping his total to 440 yards for the year.
Defensively though, Allgäu is still the second toughest team in Germany to run against having given up just 46 yards rushing in eight games.
Stuttgart’s loss last week to the Comets was their fourth in the last seven games after opening the year with three straight wins. They had rebounded from an embarrassing 52-14 loss to the surging Marburg Mercenaries just before the break, beating the Munich Cowboys 31-24 two weeks ago. They had narrowly defeated the Cowboys 21-19 earlier. However, they had lost badly to the Schwabisch Hall Unicorns 63-21 the week before that. The Scorpions had celebrated their fourth win of the year in early June, defeating the Kirchdorf Wildcats 31-29. The season had opened with promise with the Scorpions getting a 30-21 win over the Marburg Mercenaries, followed by a 34-7 victory over Kirchdorf and then a 37-30 win over Ingolstadt.
Stuttgart QB Michael Eubank has thrown for 2,507 yards in 10 games with an average of 250.7 yards a game, good for fifth in the league. Last week against the Comets, he threw for 273 yards and three touchdowns. However the ground game was Stuttgart’s weak spot in the loss. Allgau outrushed the Scorpions 301 yards to 42.
Running back Giacomo De Pauli who has rushed for 617 yards and also caught 34 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Explosive wide receive Tyler Cooperwood had eight catches for 172 yards against Allgäu upping his totals to 40 receptions for 824 yards and 13 touchdowns.
This game is the second in a home and home series between these two teams.
