The Allgäu Comets (1-2) will travel to Munich today to face off against the red-hot Cowboys in a key game for the GFL South.
Munich has started a surprising 4-0 in the German Football League season under Nadine Nurasyid. Nuryasid was announced as the head coach for the club back in November making her the first-ever female head coach after being an important part of the organization since 2018.
Whatever Nursyid has told her squad, it’s working. The Cowboys have found the perfect mix of dominating offense and reliable defense. The club has given up only 43 points compared to their 163 earned points in the four games so far. Munich has gained an identity of only getting better as the game goes on. They’re averaging just under 17 points a game in the fourth quarter. A majority of this offensive showcase has been credited to quarterback Wyatt Smith who’s had an incredible start to the year averaging 217 yards a game with a 74% completion rate. On the defensive side, Munich has been led by first-year Cowboy linebacker Patrick Kenney who leads the team with 21 tackles. Kenney played for four years at Bryant University (NCAA Div. 1) before signing with Munich back in April.
Flipping it over to Allgäu, it hasn’t been the start the Comets were hoping for. Sitting at 1-2, they currently sit fourth in the standings in the South. While not a pretty looking start, Allgäu is not as bad as their record looks. In week one, they lost by a single point against the Straubing Spiders. In week two they put up a masterclass performance in a 48-20 win against the Ravensburg Razorbacks. Then they lost 42-28 to the division leading and unbeaten Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns. To add to this point, Allgäu has only been outscored by 13 from opponents this year.
If Allgäu wants to improve to 2-2, they are going to have to find a way to stop Munich’s air attack. The Cowboys’ ground attack does not have the same impact. If the Comets want to give their offense a chance, they must force Munich into running the ball. Veteran linebacker Niall Padden will play a major role today in leading the defense. He currently has 31 tackles on the year and has been nothing short of fantastic. But if he wants a win, he’ll have to work on also propelling his teammates around him.
