The winless Stuttgart Scorpions (0-6) will be looking for a season-salvaging first win Saturday, June 16 as the play host to the 3-2 Marburg Mercenaries , Europe #19 at GAZI Stadion in Stuttgart, Germany.
The Scorpions offense has improved slightly under new quarterback Michael Eubank, their third quarterback of the season. Stuttgart started the year with Frank Brock and after his departure Rick Webster stepped in. Eubank took over two games ago.
Nevertheless, Stuttgart will be facing a Mercenaries team coming off a huge upset win over the Allgäu Comets last week. Playing without a true starting quarterback, Marburg head coach Dale Heffron installed the “Wildcat” offense with running back Silas Nacita at the helm. Nacita played a brilliant game helping Marburg come away with a 28-14 win. But the defense also stepped up reducing the vaunted Comets aerial attack to mortal status. This was the same Allgau team that whipped the Scorpions less than a month ago, 56-14.
Despite that, Stuttgart looked much better against Allgäu two weeks ago. Although they lost 42-22, they slowed down the Comets somewhat and scored 22 points, their high for the season.
The Scorpions defense will not be able to rely on game film for this game as Marburg has signed a new quarterback, Robert Webber who will see his first action in this game. The graduate of Humboldt State set a number of school passing records in his four years there so look for another aerial assault.
This is a game both teams need to win. For Stuttgart to have any hope at all of salvaging the season and making the playoffs, it will have to start today. Marburg has moved up into third in the GFL South standings and need a win to stay ahead of the Comets.
