LIVESTREAM: Friday Night Football in Denmark – Søllerød Gold Diggers @Copenhagen Towers, Friday, Aug. 23, 7p CEDT (1p EDT)
The 7-1 Søllerød Gold Diggers head to Copenhagen, Denmark, Friday, August 23 to take on the unbeaten, defending Danish champions, the Copenhagen Towers (7-0) in Denmark’s National League at Gentofte Stadion.
This is the second of two games between these two teams this year. The Towers defeated Søllerød in the first game 44-26.
The Gold Diggers have rebounded from a dismal season last year and could challenge Copenhagen for first place in this game.
Copenhagen has cruised through the season without a hiccup so far and boasts the second-highest scoring offense (49 pts/game) and the stingiest defense (18 pts/game). The Towers will be trying to stretch their unbeaten string to 30, a feat unmatched in Danish American football history. The last time Copenhagen lost a game to a Danish team was in fact the opening game of the 2017 season when the Gold Diggers defeated them 30-26.
Copenhagen has also played a pair of international games, losing to Finland’s Helsinki Roosters 22-18 and downing the Stockholm Mean Machines from Sweden 28-25.
Quarterback Danny Higgins from Bridgewater State University has given the Towers a solid offense and running back Ashton Heard from North Greenville University provides an exciting running game. In the win over Stockholm, Heard rushed for 142 yards and caught a 75 yards pass, scoring three of the Towers touchdowns.
Søllerød has looked very impressive so far this year with their only loss being to Copenhagen. The offense is averaging 52 points a game, tops in the league while the defense is second only to Copenhagen, allowing 20.5 points a game.
Quarterback Nick Rooney (Adams State University) and Griffin Norberg (Valparaiso University) at wide receiver they have vastly improved the offense. Veteran defensive back Desmond Cooper who played for the Wroclaw Panthers in Poland in 2018, has been another valuable addition.
This is the game of the season so far in Denmark.
