The Marseille Blue Stars will host the Grizzlys Catalans Saturday, January 25 in the first weekend of action in the French D1 Elite league.

These two teams faced each other twice in 2024 with Marseille beating the Grizzlys once 28-20 and tying them 14-14 in the second game.

Both teams reached the playoffs last season. The Grizzlys were beaten in the wild card round 33-27 by the Rouen Leopards while Marseille reached the semifinals but lost 28-7 to eventual champions, the Thonon Black Panthers.

The Blue Stars have signed quarterback Brandon Gwinner for the 2025 season. Gwinner has spent the last four seasons in Finland’s Maple League. He led the Porvoon Butchers to the Maple League title in 2023 and to the semifinals last year.

Former Case Western Reserve University (NCAA Div. III) quarterback Alexander Fromberg will be behind center for the Grizzlys. He earned All Conference honors in both 2023 and 2024 throwing for 4,631 yards and 46 touchdowns.

These two teams finished 1st (Marseille) and 2nd (Catalans) in 2024 and will no doubt battle to the final whistle in this opening game.
