The Thonon Black Panthers (3-1) will play host to the Asnieres Molosses (1-3) from Paris as the French D1 Elite heads into its fifth week of the season.

The Black Panthers are the defending French champions and after falling 35-0 to the La Courneuve Flash in the opening week, they have bounced back with three straight wins, beating the Cougars 28-27 in an intense battle in week 2, rolling over the Vikings in week 3 by a score of 53-0 and downing the Amiens Spartiates 42-21 last week.

The Molosses on the other hand, have had a tough road this year losing three in a row to start the season. First, they were beaten 19-14 by the Spartiates and then the Flash overwhelmed them 40-6. In week 3, they lost to the Saint-Ouen Cougars 27-16 before they finally defeated the last place Villeneuve d’Ascq Vikings 26-9 last week.

Thonon quarterback Brett Hunchak has struggled at times and has only thrown for 575 yards and seven touchdowns in four games but has yet to be intercepted. Running back Nicolas Khandar is third in the league in rushing with 40 carries for 349 yards and seven touchdowns. Benjamin Mulindahabi is the sixth leading tackler in the league with 22.5 in four games.

For Molosses, quarterback Camille Thouary is right behind his opponent with 470 yards passing and five touchdowns. Adam Oussedik is Asnieres’ leading rusher with 47 carries for 190 yards and a touchdown. Molosses defensive lineman Giovani Bitodi has recorded a pair of sacks in the four games and could cause a problem for Hunchak.

Although on paper, Thonon would seem to have the edge, the Molosses have had an uphill battle and could use last week’s win as inspiration.
