In the final game of the German Football League 2017 regular season, the Allgäu Comets will play host to the playoff bound Ingolstadt Dukes Sunday, September 10 at Illerstadion in Kempten , Germany.
The 5-8 Comets were eliminated from playoff contention a week ago when Ingolstadt beat the Stuttgart Scorpions. Had the Dukes lost that game, this match would have been for a playoff berth. Nevertheless, it promises to be an offensive showcase. The last time these two teams met, Ingolstadt came out on top 54-35.
Final game for Allgäu head coach
This will also be the final game for Allgäu head coach Brian Caler who was informed that his contract will not be renewed after nine years with the club. Although 2017 has been a disappointing season for the Comets, two years ago, Allgäu advanced all the way to the German semifinals following a 12-2 regular season and pushed the eventual champion Braunschweig New Yorker Lions to come from behind twice to finally pull away in the second half.
In other words, Ingolstadt cannot take the Comets lightly in this game as Allgäu’s players will no doubt be playing hard for their head coach. Caler’s overall record with the Comets in the German Football league is 31-24. That followed back-to-back 12-2 seasons in the German Football League second division.
Aerial fireworks
However, there is a reason the Ingolstadt Dukes have qualified for the playoffs in their first season in the top German league. Their aerial attack. Ingolstadt leads the league in passing behind the arm of quarterback Rick Webster who is averaging a league-leading 298 yards a game and has thrown for 3,279 yards and 35 touchdowns in the 11 games he has played. The Comets secondary, that has surrendered 253 yards passing a game this year, will be hard pressed in this game.
Allgäu signal caller Cedric Townsend while having thrown for few passing yards, 2,002 and 22 touchdowns, has also rushed for 465 yards and six touchdowns. Expect Townsend to get his teammates fired up for this game though.
Two of the top receivers in the league, Comets wide receiver Christian Hafels and Lorenz Regler of the Dukes will be putting their skills on display in the final game of the regular season. Regler has averaged 81.5 yards receiving per game while Hafels has 85.8.
This will be a treat to watch.
