LIVESTREAM Denmark: Søllerød Gold Diggers @ Copenhagen Towers, Aug. 14, 19:00 CET (13:00 ET)
Friday August 14th will feature two of the top teams in Denmark as the Søllerød Gold Diggers will be taking on the Copenhagen Towers in Copenhagen. This early season matchup could be a preview of the Danish semi-finals or even championship.
The visiting Søllerød Gold Diggers are entering their second game of the season after dominating the AaB 89ers 62-16 in week 1. Søllerød’s offense was humming as new quarterback Tanner Gueller (Idaho State: NCAA FCS D1) threw a touchdown and ran in two more. After cruising into halftime with a 46-6 lead the second half went by quickly as a mercy rule indicates that a 34 point lead triggers a running clock. Søllerød was dominant in all phases, forcing two interceptions and blocking a punt. Facing the Copenhagen Towers in week 2 should be much tougher competition. Defensive back Noah Richards had some thoughts on the upcoming game:
“I think we just need to focus on doing our jobs whether on offense, defense, or special teams. We have more than enough talent to win this weekend, it all just comes down to execution.”
Søllerød Gold Diggers @ Copenhagen Towers, Aug. 14, 19:00 CET (13:00 ET)
The Towers are entering their first game of the season. Their last game was a 20-14 Championship Mermaid Bowl loss the to the Triangle Razorbacks back in 2019. Copenhagen had previously won back to back titles in 2018 and 2017 are looking to take back the title in 2020. Head coach Peter Herbild has added some new faces to his offense. At quarterback the Towers have signed Calvin Stitt. Stitt is a young British quarterback who played for the Allgau Comets in the German Football League the last two seasons. Stitt will be aided by American wide receiver MJ Williams (Concordia University St. Paul: NCAA D2). The 6’1″ Williams had 997 career yards for the Bears. Stitt’s thoughts on week 1:
“It’s gonna come down to execution and getting off to a fast start, and making sure we can minimize mistakes.”
Defensively the Towers bring back a ton of experience. The linebacker duo of Andreas Schneider and Philip Hargett looks to be a force in the Danish league. Also returning for the Towers is edge defender Will Sewell. Sewell had 24 career sacks for Frostburg State D3 NCAA: Head coach Peter Herbild had some thoughts on his experienced defense:
“Defense is the same as last year. Our defensive line is our biggest strength with four high level players, including import Will Sewell in his second year with us. Our linebackers have a lot of experience and might be the best duo in Denmark with Andreas Schneider and Philip Hargett. The secondary looks strong with young players like Gulbæk, Kenneth Larsen and Jakob Bækgaard getting better each year, combined with experienced veterans Bitsch, Zacho and Bendixen. Combining the with players from all over Europe makes this group very competitive.”
This is a huge early season matchup in the Danish National League. The Gold Diggers are coming into the season with a plethora of new talent and high expectations while the Towers are looking to reclaim their past championship glory. Look for this game to be exciting and filled with emotion.
