The undefeated Copenhagen Towers, Europe #10, will face the Triangle Razorbacks in Mermaid Bowl XXX on Saturday, October 13 at Slagelse Stadion.
The Towers are seven-time Danish champions and have reached the final nine times while Triangle has also won the title seven times and are making their 11th trip to the championships game.
The Towers have had a season to remember, marching through the Danish league without a loss, averaging almost 50 points a game. Copenhagen won the Northern European Football League title, beating Sweden’s Carlstad Crusaders 44-43 in a thriller. In fact, their only loss this year was to Austrian champions, the Swarco Raiders, Europe #4, when they were defeated 45-20 in the European championship.
Towers quarterback Randy Schroeder threw six touchdown passes in a win over the Razorbacks six weeks ago and has been outstanding since joining the team in mid May this year. His receiving corps includes Philip Thue as well as Jakob Green, Jesper Hansen, Lasse Tor and Aske Troen. Running back Dayton Winn is arguably the best back in Denmark and will really put the Razorbacks front seven to the test.
Triangle has won seven of their last eight games with the only glitch being a sound drubbing last month at the hands of the Towers, 49-14. The Razorbacks won the Danish title in 2006, 2007, 2008, 2011, 2012, 2015 and 2016. Veteran running back Geoffrey Lewis is the key to the Razorbacks offense. Lewis scored both touchdowns in the 16-14 semifinal win over the Aarhus Tigers while the defense came up big when they had to including causing an intentional grounding in the end zone for two crucial points. Triangle quarterbacks Jairus Moll and Thomas Linnemann are both veterans of post-season play.
Although on paper, this would seem to be an easy game for Copenhagen, the Razorbacks have been in the Mermaid Bowl more times than any other team in Denmark and pulled off upsets.
