The Copenhagen Towers (1-0) will travel to northern Denmark Saturday, May 29 to visit the Triangle Razorbacks as the second weekend of the Danish Nationalligaen is set to kick-off under the lights in Vejle.
For the Triangle Razorbacks, they enter the season once again led by veteran quarterback Reed Gottula who returns to an offense that looks much different than 2020. Protecting Gottula will be a one of the country’s strongest offensive lines with Matthias Stockamp and Mikkell Hansen returning, combining with the addition of 6’5″, 300 pound offensive tackle Jawaugn Arnold. Lanky (6’2″) receiver Jeremy Cornielius should give Gottula a big new target to throw to.

Razorbacks quarterback Reed Gottulla commented on the team’s preparation for the season:
“This preseason we have had a focus on fundamentals and details. We have had consistent participation that allowed us to stay on schedule for installing schemes as well as skill development. It has been a lot of fun to get back on the field and the team is looking forward to the season.”
Defensively, the Razorbacks have added veteran defensive coordinator Wojciech Andrzejczak, who brings experience from Towson University (NCAA D1 FCS) and various top leagues in Europe. Some pieces that Andrzejczak will have are linebackers Kenneth Bradley (Ithaca College: NCAA D3) and Dane Christian Kvist Nielsen. On the defensive line, Allexsander Klose is a young player who showed excellent promise last season, and who the Razorbacks are expecting to make a jump in 2021.
Klose on the Razorbacks preseason preparation:
“It has been pretty good despite COVID. We have a lot of new and young players that have put in a lot work so I feel like we are in a good place to play the first game.”
The visiting Towers are coming off a 38-13 victory over the AaB 89ers in their season opener. In that game, running back Anton Witmeur rushed for over 100 yards and three touchdowns. The Towers ran the ball effectively behind a dominant performance from their offensive line. Quarterback Randall Schroeder commanded the offense in his return to Denmark throwing for two touchdowns. Look for the Towers and their offense to play well again against the Razorbacks.
Schroeder on the matchup:
“They always have a good team. They were the last team to win the Mermaid Bowl. They are a great team, they are big, and really well coached; it’s always a challenge playing them.”
Defensively, the Towers hounded the quarterback last week finishing the game with six sacks, two and a half of which came from Magnus Larsen. Look for the capital city defense to be flying around again tonight.
The Triangle Razorbacks are eager to get back to playing ball after a long off-season. They’ll play host to a strong Copenhagen team they know far too well, as these two squads have met in the last two Mermaid Bowl Championship games. Fans should expect a great game under the lights from both squads.
