LIVESTREAM: Austrian Football League – Danube Dragons @SonicWall Modling Rangers, May 12, 3p (9a EST)
The Danube Dragons ( 2-3) take the 30 minute trip to Mödling Stadium Saturday, May 12 in a crucial Austrian Football League matchup against the number three team in Austria, the 4-2 SonicWall Mödling Rangers.
Mödling is coming off a close 25-20 loss to the Dacia Vienna Vikings last week and now sits third behind Vienna and the Swarco Raiders. Danube squeaked by the last place Bratislava Monarchs and is fifth in the standings.
The Rangers offense is the third best in Austria having scored 229 points in six games while Danube trails averaging just under 22 points a game. Defensively, Danube has a slight edge giving up 29.2 points a game while the Rangers allow 31.
Rangers quarterback Dylan Potts, a former USA College Football All-American (West Liberty University (D-II) played for the Dragons in 2017 and is playing his first game against his former team, He led the Dragons to the wild card playoffs year ago. Like last year, he leads the Austrian Football League in rushing so far this year with 792 yards and 12 touchdowns and is second in passing with 1,767 yards. In other words, to stop the Rangers, Danube needs to stop Potts. A fact which is not lost on the team that relied on him a year ago.
Dragons quarterback Chad Jeffries who is not far behind Potts in yardage having thrown for 1,262 yards in five games, was one of the leading quarterbacks in the German Football League in 2017. Jeffries helped the Marburg Mercenaries return to respectability throwing for 3,045 yards and 28 touchdowns while rushing for another 305 yards and three touchdowns in 11 games. He was the second leading passer in the GFL in terms of average passing yards per game with 276.8.
Rangers WR Roman Namdar tops the AFL in receiving with 891 yards while Dragons leading receiver, Philipp Haun has 348 yards in five games.
The biggest difference offensively between the two teams is the ground game. Thanks to Potts, Mödling has the second leading rushing offense in the AFL averaging 196 yards a game. The Dragons are far behind averaging just over 66.
Danube will have their backs against the wall in this game and need a win badly. That could be the key factor.
