The 9-0 Swarco Raiders, Europe #2, will be looking to wrap up the Austrian Football League season with an undefeated record when they travel to Mödling , Austria to face the 4-5 SonicWall Mödling Rangers Saturday, June 22.
This is the second meeting between these two team this year. The Raiders won the first encounter, beating Mödling 54-14. Swarco has already locked up first place and a bye into the semifinals and home field advantage. The Rangers are battling with the Graz Giants for the fifth and sixth playoff spots although fourth is still up for grabs depending on the results of the other games in the AFL this weekend.
The Raiders defeated the Graz Giants last week 37-30 and the week before celebrated a third consecutive CEFL championship title win, coming from behind to defeat Switzerland’s Calanda Broncos 46-42. The week before, Swarco downed the Dacia Vienna Vikings 34-13 in the Charity Bowl and sit atop the Austrian Football League standings.
Swarco quarterback Sean Shelton has thrown for 2,093 yards and 29 TDs while rushing for another 357 yards and 5 TDs.. He has a lot of weapons at his disposal including Sandro Platzgummer who has rushed for 383 yards. Shelton’s top receiver is Patrick Donahue who has 426 yards in receptions and 5 TDs although he did not play in the win over the Giants.
Mödling is on a four game losing streak after losing back -to-back games to the Prague Black Panthers, 52-21 and 35-0. Before that they were beaten 54-14 by Swarco and then lost to the Vikings 55-28.
Rangers quarterback, Tyler Bruggman has thrown for 1,564 yards and 16 TDs including a six touchdown performance in the 74-49 rout of the Traun Steelsharks. His top receivers are Roman Namdar with 727 yards and Eugen Sumic with 738 yards in receptions and 10 touchdowns. Running back Florian Wegan is second in Austria in rushing with 876 yards.
Will the Raiders rest some starters in preparation for the playoffs and will head coach Shuan Fatah look to finish the season undefeated? Mödling will be desperate for a win, especially in front of their home crowd.
