LIVESTREAM: Austria – SonicWall Mödling Rangers @Prague Black Panthers, Sunday June 2, 3p CEDT (9a EDT)
The 3-4 Prague Black Panthers will play host to the 4-3 SonicWall Mödling Rangers Sunday, June 2 at Prague’s Prosek stadium in Austrian Football League late season action.
This is the first in a back-to-back series between these two teams battling for playoff positioning in the AFL. Both teams are coming off of losses to the Dacia Vienna Vikings and Swarco Raiders. Prague lost to Swarco 28-14 after dropping a 28-3 decision to the Vikings. Mödling was beaten 54-14 by Swarco and then lost to the Vikings 55-28. Before that, Prague had won three of four games easily beating the basement dwelling Amstetten Thunder twice, 51-6 and 49-9 along with the winless Traun Steelsharks, 56-8. Along the way they dropped a 35-14 decision to the Graz Giants.
There have been a few changes as the team has released head coach Daniel Levy who took them through an unbeaten season in 2018, replacing him on an interim basis with club president Petr Vítovec. Emmanuel Lewis who had been brought in when starting quarterback Dylan Potts was hurt, is now the offensive coordinator with James Brooks as the defensive coordinator.
Although he missed a couple of games, Potts has returned and thrown for 576 yards and 6 TDs while rushing for 405 yards and another 5 TDs. Teammate Herbert Gamboa has rushed for a league-leading 806 yards and 8 TDs. Jan Stiegler leads the team in receiving with 177 yards with Gamboa second with 128.
In other words, Prague likes to run the ball. They lead the league averaging 207.4 yards a game. They also have the best defense against the run allowing just 36.4 yards a game.
The Rangers new quarterback, Tyler Bruggman (Montana State) has the offense performing at a high level since taking over and in four games has thrown for 1,213 yards and 14 TDs including a six touchdown performance in the 74-49 rout of the Traun Steelsharks. His top receivers are Roman Namdar with 562 yards and Eugen Sumic with 643 yards in receptions and 10 touchdowns. Running back Florian Wegan is second in Austria in rushing with 773 yards.
This could be a scoring fest.
