The 6-1 Dacia Vienna Vikings, Europe #6, will play host to the 3-4 Ljubljana Silverhawks at Hohe Warte Stadion in Vienna, Austria, May 27 in a game that is huge importance for both teams.
The Vikings are coming off an embarrassing 55-13 loss to arch rivals the Swarco Raiders two weeks ago after both starting quarterback Garrett Safron and wide receiver Reece Horn were out of the lineup with injuries..
Meanwhile, Ljubljana defeated the Bratislava Monarchs 42-20 in their last outing.
The last time these two teams met, in mid April, Vienna won easily 63-33. In that game, Safron had a superb day completing 18 of 20 passes for 332 yards and five touchdowns. His counterpart with the Silverhawks,
Zach Cavanough who is now the league’s leading passer in the AFL with 2,065 yards, struggled somewhat completing 15 of 33 passes from 250 yards and four touchdowns. The Silverhawks Matic Tomse is the second leading receiver in the AFL with 739 yards receiving while Bernhard Seikovits of the Vikings has caught 38 passes for 440 yards.
If Safron and Horn return to the lineup look for the Vikings to take control of the game early. However, without those two, the Vikings may have to rely on backup quarterback Yannick Mayr who completed just 7 of 17 passes for 29 yards in the loss to Swarco. Although he rushed for 163 yards and a touchdown he was basically the entire offense for the Vikings.
The team is keeping tight lipped about the status of Safron and Horn.
