The Tyresö Royal Crowns from Sweden will play host to Denmark’s Aalborg 89ers Saturday, April 30 as the Scandinavian Cup returns after a 30-year hiatus.
The Royal Crowns opened their season in Sweden with a surprising 35-16 win over the defending champion Örebro Black Knights but then dropped two in a row, first 34-20 to the Stockholm Mean Machines and then 10-7 to the Carlstad Crusaders. Quarterback Phil Juhlin has plenty of weapons at his disposal but has yet to find a rhythm to an offense that he also directs as offensive coordinator. His favorite targets include Edwin Taborda as well as Mattias Gauthier, Niko Peterson and Dovydas “Dovve” Koncevicius. Young running back Carl Lundberg has carried the load on the ground and can cause problems.
The 89ers enter the new season with a brand-new head coach in Jakob Zinck Thellufsen and a new quarterback, DeAndre Clayton (Morehead State). Clayton has a pair of young, talented wide receivers to throw to in Magnus Urth and Jeppe Pedersen. Although Aalborg suffered a 54-24 defeat at the hands of the Sollerod Gold Diggers last week in Danish Nationlligaen play, they are still finding their footing with a bevy of new players.
This could be a closer game than it appears on paper.
