LIVE STREAM: Germany – Samsung Frankfurt Universe v. Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (7p CEST ,1p EDT)
The 5-0 Frankfurt Universe will play host to the top rated and also undefeated Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns (7-0) Saturday June 24 in a battle which will decide the number one seed in the German Football League’s South division.
This is a game that pits Schwäbisch Hall’s league-leading offense which has scored 337 points so far in the 2017 season against the stingiest defense of the Frankfurt Universe which has held opponents to 5.4 points a game.
In the two games between these two teams in 2016, the Unicorns prevailed both times, 26-21 and 35-28.
The Universe are coming off a big 56-7 win over the Munich Cowboys last week where they displayed their firepower and league-best defense. Schwabisch Hall meanwhile, unleashed their firepower in a 65-53 win over the Ingolstadt Dukes but revealed vulnerability on defense as the Dukes racked up 546 yards passing against them.
Schwäbisch Hall quarterback Marco Ehrenfried leads the league in passing yardage with 2,111 while throwing 29 touchdown passes. Sonny Weishaupt of the Universe is beginning to feel comfortable as the starter and is among the leaders in passing efficiency. He has not thrown an interception in five games.
Both quarterbacks have quality receivers to throw to in Tyler Rutenbeck (605 yards, 7 TDs) of the Unicorns and Frankfurt’s David Giron (402, 8 TDs)
Universe running back Silas Nacita is having another banner year rushing the ball averaging 121 yards a game good for third overall, while his counterpart with the Unicorns, Jerome Manyema is the fifth leading rusher with his 449 yards and 10 touchdowns.
Both running backs will be facing the best rush defense they have played against this year. Frankfurt is number one against the run while the Unicorns are second.
Frankfurt linebacker Simon Gavanda leads a tough-as-nails defense that will put the Unicorns to their stiffest test this season. Gavanda is the German sack leader with seven sacks in five games so Ehrenfried will need to have his head on a swivel to be on the lookout for #93.
This game may well come down to how well the Universe defense can match up against Schwäbisch Hall’s potent offense.
This is definitely the game to watch in the GFL South so far this year.
