LIVE STREAM PPV: CFL – Ottawa REDBLACKS v. Calgary Stampeders in Grey Cup #2, 9p EDT (3a CET)
The Calgary Stampeders head back to the familiar, friendly and winning confines of McMahon Stadium Thursday night to stage another Grey Cup rematch duel against the Ottawa REDBLACKS.
Last week, the head to head quarterback battle between Bo Levi Mitchell of the Stampeders and Ottawa’s Trevor Harris, was about as exciting as it gets for a season-opening weekend. In Week 2, these two dynamic passers will do it all over again.
Mitchell threw for 376 yards in last week’s contest while Harris tossed three touchdown passes. Calgary slotback Marquay McDaniel led all receivers with 10 catches for 114 yards while linebacker Alex Singleton had a game-high nine tackles. Ottawa running back Brendan Gillanders was the top rusher, with 80 yards on 12 carries.
Thursday Night Football brings us the rematch of the rematch as the Stampeders and REDBLACKS meet for the third straight outing in a competitive setting dating back to last year’s Grey Cup. Last week, in Ottawa, the offences combined for 853 yards while the Stampeders erased a 14-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime. Four extra possessions solved nothing and the result was a 31-31 tie.
On Thursday, the scene shifts to Calgary where the Stampeders haven’t lost since 2015. But that won’t scare the REDBLACKS, who’ve proven time and again they can handle the CFL’s best.
Can the REDBLACKS embrace the role of underdog as they did in the 2016 Grey Cup game? Or will the Stampeders finally get their revenge after tasting Grey Cup defeat?
The Stampeders’ dominance at home over the years likely shifts them to clear favorite in this matchup. At McMahon Stadium, the Stamps went 9-0 last season and 8-1 in 2015 while Bo Levi Mitchell is an astounding 24-3-0 at home throughout his career. Also, McMahon Stadium is the only CFL venue in which Ottawa is winless since joining the league in 2014. An average of nearly 45 points per game has been put up by the Stamps when hosting the RedBlacks.
What’s more, Calgary has beaten Ottawa 48-23, 48-3 and 38-17 (a margin of 134-43) in three head to head meetings at McMahon since the REDBLACKS came into the league in 2014.
