The Saarland Hurricanes (2-2) play host to the Munich Cowboys (0-5) in a key German Football League South division matchup Saturday May 27 at Ellenfeldstadion in Neunkirchen, Saarland.
The Hurricanes opened the season with two straight wins but have since dropped two in a row, in back to back games against the powerful Schwäbisch Hall Unicorns.
Saarland has suffered through a spate of injuries early in the season including a season-ending injury to starting quarterback Alex Haupert. However, with a new quarterback, Danny Farley behind center, general manager Torsten Reif is optimistic:
“We have had some early turbulence in the 2017 season and hopefully have been able to make adjustments and correct things for the last 10 games of the season and end up where we want to be, winning games in the playoffs.”
The Hurricanes played Munich in the opening game of the season and came away with a 29-14 win behind the excellent defensive play of linebacker Charles Clay who had a 53 yard punt return touchdown as well as an interception.
However, this will be Farley’s debut game after only arriving in Germany this past week so jet lag could be a factor.
The Cowboys have suffered through five straight losses but have looked improved in the last two games. Ben Wilkerson is back behind center in this game as Dylann Rauch has suffered a torn hamstring. This will be Wilkerson’s first start since the opening game of the season so he will be eager to perform well. He rushed for 109 yards in that game and threw two touchdown passes.
