The Hildesheim Invaders (0-1) travel to Dresden, Germany as the Monarchs (0-0) begin GFL play
Saturday’s match marks the beginning of the 2017 German Football League season for the Dresden Monarchs. The Monarchs have been represented in Germany’s top league since 2003.
Leading the powerful Monarch offense this season, and replacing the GFL’s leading passer Brandon Connette, is Garrett Safron. Safron spent time with the Milano Seamen and was in mini-camp with the Oakland Raiders in 2015. Also joining the Monarchs are a quartet of Australians surely enticed by the Monarchs Australian national team head coach John Leijten. Dresden may be able to maintain their spot at near the top of the GFL standings if they can repeat the offensive feats they pulled off last season.
Just recently, Dresden also signed American import Marc Millan to boost their defense.
Leijten on the reinforcement,:
“What I have seen so far from Marc has convinced me. He is a fast, powerful and intelligent player who can quickly recognize and react to moves. I am sure that he can give us the necessary stability for the GFL in the center of our defense.”
Millan’s impact on on the Dresden defesne will surely show up in the game against the Invaders.
The Invaders are led by head coach and European football legend Joe Roman and played the spoiler much of 2016. The Invaders have not lost many players in the off-season and look to improve on a 5-9 2016 record. They return the leader of their offense, import quarterback Zach Cavanaugh and add defensive back Jacob Adelman.
This is the Hildesheimers second game of their 2017 GFL season. Their opening match at the Cologne Crocodiles they unexpectedly lost 41-26. If they expect to defeat the Monarchs, the 2016 GFL South runners-up, the Invaders will need a substantial performance improvement.
